Abstract

473,714. Elastic - fluid turbines. BURKE, P. W., and VINCETT, G. J. Jan. 18, 1937. No. 19207 /36. [Class 110 (iii)] Turbine discs and wheels are made up of a number of plates having blades formed by slotting, these slots being so formed that on assembly a crescent shaped blade of smooth contour is formed. A turbine wheel 10 is made up of plates 12, 13, 14 which are slotted at 24, 26, to form blades 22, 23. A modification, Fig. 4, shows a wheel 40 made up of blades 50 stamped from plates which are seated on ribs 46 between two end plates 42, 43. When used as fixed discs, the outside periphery 45 of the plates is extended in an axial direction so as to locate them in the turbine casing. The wheels and discs may be used in a turbine with the inner row of blades 23 for ahead running and the outer row 22 for astern. The wheel 10 may also be used in a turbine where the steam is first directed on to blades 23 and then on to blades 22. The plates may be secured together by bolts, rivets, or by welding, or a metal ring with inwardly directed flanges may be shrunk on their periphery. Specifications 16157/02 and 1657/03, [both in Class 110], are referred to.
