Abstract

1437498 Making fluid couplings DAIKIN SEISAKUSHO KK 21 Dec 1973 [30 Dec 1972] 59337/73 Heading B3A [Also in Divisions F1 and F2] A blade wheel for a fluid coupling or torque converter comprises a core ring 34, a plurality of blades 35 each having a flange 36 complementary to the interior surface of a shell 32, each flange 36 having at least at one of its ends a tab 38, 39 which is bent over the periphery of the shell 32 and secured thereto when the latter is seam welded to a support ring 28, 33. As shown in a torque converter having an impeller 11, turbine 12 and reactor 13, the flanges 36 of the impeller blades 35 have tabs 38, 39 which are bent over the outer and inner peripheries of the. shell 32 and respectively welded between the shell 32 and a support ring 28 and between the shell 32 and an impeller hub 33. The blades 35 have additional flanges 37 provided with tabs 44, 45 which are bent over the peripheries of the core ring 34 and soldered thereto. The flanges 36 may additionally be soldered or spot welded to the shell 32. The turbine wheel 12 is constructed in a similar manner. The blades and wheel shells may be stamped from sheet metal. The tabs on the flanges of the blades may be located in recesses in the periphery of the shell.
