[Class 38 (ii)] In an arrangement for producing highvoltage D.C. at terminals O1, 02 from a source of A.C. T and comprising a number of condensers C1 ... C4 charged through thermionic valves V 1 ... V4, resistances R1 ... R4 are inserted in the anode circuits of the rectifiers to prevent excessive reverse current therein, due, for example, to temporary softening of one or more of the valves. The cathodes of the latter are supplied from batteries or generators E1 ... E4, and the various elements may be arranged in three or four columns in which the elements of higher voltage are superposed on those of lower voltage. The resistances may be arranged in the columns containing the condensers, or in the columns containing the valves, or, as shown in Fig. 2, they may be incorporated in the cross-connect. ing pieces between the columns.
