[Class 61 (ii)] A plane in which the cutting iron is mounted so as to enable it to be tilted backward or forward to vary its angle to the surface on which it is working and also to enable the cutting iron to be adjusted up or down and to be tilted in its own plane comprises a bracket 3 with upright, and inclined parts 3a, 3b in which are mounted rotatably nuts 7, 4 geared together by mitre wheels 10 and rotated by a thumb wheel 12 on the nut 4, the nuts operating eyebolts 13, 14 pivoted to supports 15, 18 for the plane iron 16 ; rotation of the thumb wheel 12 causes a differential movement of the two supports 15, 18 resulting in a backward or forward tilting of the iron 16. The support 15 slides on the sole plate 2 and has a hemispherical recess to receive a hemispherical body 17 with a flat upper face on which the plane iron rests. The upper support 18 is in the form of a barrel in which is located a small annulus 26 engaging the head 25 of the screw connecting the plane iron to the break iron 24, the annulus 26 having mounted therein a rod 21 having a screw-threaded end 20 threading into a hole in a second annulus 19. Axial rotation of the rod 21 moves the plane iron up or down to vary the depth of cut and lateral movement of the rod permitted by a slot 22 in the barrel 18 causes tilting of the plane iron, as shown in Fig. 4. The iron is clamped after adjustment by a wedge 28.
