This invention relates to a lathe tool holder and more particularly to a tool post of the type illustrated and descrihedin applicants copending application 'Serial No. 534,646, which issued'` April 24, i945, as Patent No. 2,374,477.
The principal object ci theinvention is to provide means for holding a tool in a post oi this character by means of which the tool can be adjusted for angle to either side and also for height without disturbing the setting of the complete post assembly. v Y
Another object the invention is to provide a Simp-leganti highly erlicient tool post which can he quickly and easily placdin a conventional 'ompoundllathe tool rest and which will support the cutting tool in any desired position for any type of work and .viiich, in addition, can be used to guide the tool for accurately forming arcuate conrexities or concavities of any desired radius in the work.
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction oi the invention, whichv is designed for simplicity, economy, and eiciency. These will become more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description of the invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numerels refer to like parts in all views of the drawing and throughout the description.
In the drawing:
Fig. l is a perspective View of the complete improved tool holding attachment for lathes;
Figs. 2 and 3 are cross-sections therethrough taken on the lines 2-2 and 3 3, respectively, Fig. 1;
Fig. e is a detail section through the tool holding portion of the device, taken on the line i-i, Fig. 3; and
Fig. is a rear end view of the improved attachment.
This improved tool post is designed for application toa conventional compound tool rest having a dove-tailed post-receiving channel for freceiving and holding the standard tool post. The improved attachment is provided with a foot plate It which slides into the dove-tailed groove of the rest and is locked therein by means of a vertical set screw lI which engages the bottom of the channel of the conventional rest and clamps the plate Iii against the upper sides of the 2 claims. (o1. ca -3e) which closes a split I'I about the post I3. A set screw 23 extends inwardly' from each'side edge of the member I5; 'The extremities ofthe Vscrews 23, terminate in the groove' lli to hold the member I5 in place'von thepost i3; The outer extremity of the base member I5 extends upwardly, or has an vupwardly,extending blockv attached thereto, to forni a clamp and guide member I8.
A horizontal slide bar i9 passes through a hole drilled through the clamp member vI8 with its axis parallel to thebase member I5. and intersecting the axis of the postv I3, The hole in the member I8 which receivesjthe bar I9 is split'ras shown at 20 and this'jsplit maybe clamd together by means of ,aL clamp screw 2l toy clamp the bar in' any desired position therein. The forward extremity of the bar iii is threaded or otherwise attached in a slide block 22 having a at bottom which rests on the base member I5.
A short cylindrical tool supporting plug 24 is vertically and rotatably mounted in a 'cylindrical socket in the forward extremity of the slide block 22. The upper forward portion of the block 22 is cut back to expose the upper forward portion of the cylindrical tool plug 24. The bottom of the forward portion of the block 22 is not cut back and the socket does not extend completely therethrough so that a supporting shelf 29 is provided for supporting the plug 2li and absorbing the downward thrust thereon. A tool channel 25 extends diametrically through the plug 24 at a downward incline, as shown in Fig. 4, to receive any desired metal cutting tool 25. The tool 26 is locked in its channel by means of a clamp screw 21 extending axially downward from the top of the plug 24. The plug 25 may be locked at any desired radial or vertical position in its socket by means of oppositely acting set screws 28.
When used for turning a ball the conventional tool rest is adjusted to place the axis of the pivot post I3 directly below the center of the desired ball. The cylindrical post is adjusted and set in its socket to place the cutting edge of the tool 26 at the proper point to completely surround and cut-off the ball. The tool is fed to the work by the regular cross feed screw of the tool rest and is caused to travel around the ball by swinging the bar I9 from side to side about the pivot post I3.
For turning a concavity the axis of the pivot post I3 is placed below the center point of the desiredY concavity and the slide block is moved across the pivot post I3 until the tool contacts the work. The tool is fed to the work by the cross-feed of the standard tool rest and is traversed across the concavity by swinging the bar I9 from side to side about the axis of the pivot I DOst I'3.
While a specic form of the improvement has been described and illustrated herein, it is desired to be understood that the same may be'varied,
within. the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
