Abstract

472,904. Combing-machines. NASMITH, J. W. April 1, 1936, No. 9571. [Class 120 (i)] In the piecing mechanism of a combing- machine the piecing point of a piecing roller pair P, P<1>, Fig. 1, is positively moved in a direction away from the detaching point D and combing cylinder S for the backing-off of an end of fleece T for piecing purposes and again arrives at its original position for piecing after such backing-off, positive guide and control means being moved in synchronism therewith to engage and control the end T during the backing-off and subsequent piecing operation. The lower fluted piecing roller P is mounted in bearings 1 slidable in guides 2, each roller bearing carrying a pin 3 connected by a link 4 to a lever 6 on a shaft 7, which is oscillated as required. The upper fluted piecing roller P<1> is carried by arms 11 each pivoted on a pin 10 secured in an arm 9 which is rockable on a liner 8 projecting beyond the bearing I, the engagement of the rollers P, P<1> being maintained by a tension spring mounted at 14 and being regulated by a screw 12. A link 16 is hinged on the pin 10 and pivots on a pin 17 fixed in a link 18 which swings on a pin 19, the end of the link 16 abutting against a set screw 20 which serves to position the pin 17, link 16 and pin 10. A tension spring 21 maintains the link 16 against the screw 20 except when the roller P approaches the position of Fig. 1, when an expansion ring loose on the bearings of roller P <1> makes contact with a bush on the detaching roller D and forces the link 16 off the screw 20. The fluted control roller P<2> is mounted in an arm 24 which pivots on the adjustable pin 19. An expansion ring is provided loose on the pin 26 and makes contact with a ring (not shown) on the bush or liner 8. The rollers P, P<2> are kept in engagement by the spring 28. The pin 19 is fixed in the bracket 30 which hinges upon a fixed pin 31, the bracket 30 having an arm 32 slotted at 33 and provided with a screw 34 for adjustment of the bearings of the roller P<2>. In operation, the forward end of the fleece being detached by the roller D is shown T<1>, Fig. 3, the rollers rotating as shown until the detached portion has been pieced to the fleece T, Fig. 4. The rollers then cease rotating and the roller P is moved to the left to the position shown in Fig. 5, the roller P moving around the roller P. The assembly then dwells an instant in the position shown, Fig. 5. The reverse rotation then commences so that the rear tips of the detached fleece pass straight into the nip of the rollers P, P<2> and the roller P moves back to its original position. In a modification a double apron 37, 39, Fig. 6, is employed instead of the roller P<2>, the endless apron 37 passing round a light roller 36 and a coiled length of apron 39 being wrapped round a roller 38. Both aprons 37, 39 are secured to a rod 40 which is reciprocated in the plane of the apron surfaces, a spring acting to return the roller 38 to its normal position. In operation, on moving the roller P to the left the roller P<1> descends until it nearly touches the apron 37 and the rear tips of the fleece rest thereon. As the roller P commences its reverse rotation the end is carried down between the aprons 37, 39 the movement of which is reversed in synchronism with the reversal of the rollers. Specifications 2109/83, [Class 120], 17495/09, 339,301, [both in Class 120 (i)], 345,241, 377,003, and 396,474, are referred to.
