Abstract
In the purification of caustic-soda lyes by the formation and separation of sodium hydroxide heptahydrate (2NaOH.7H2O), the heptahydrate after mechanical separation (e.g. by centrifuging) is freed from adhering mother liquor by displacement with water at a temperature of 10--14 DEG C. Preferably, the amount of water used is smaller than the volume of the mother liquor to be displaced. The preparation of 2NaOH.7H2O from electrolytic caustic soda by concentrating the lye to 50 per cent, separating solid sodium chloride, diluting with water to 38 per cent and cooling to about 14 DEG C., as set forth in German Specification 347,816, is referred to.
