Abstract

472,731. Winding yarns &c. REINERS, W., (trading as SCHLAFHORST & CO., W.). Dec. 14, 1936, No. 34321. Convention date, Feb. 8. [Class 120 (ii)] In a yarn-winding machine having automatic winding units propelled around an endless track, comprising straight portions connected by curved portions the units include mechanism, actuated by an endless driving belt or chain, for rotating the take-up bobbins of the units. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2 each winding unit is carried by arms 17, 18, supported and guided by frame members 2, 3; the arm 18 carries a roller 19 and pin 20 engaging the member 2, and the arm 17, rollers 24, 26, 28 engaging the member 3, the roller 26 being carried by a pivoted arm 25 and forced against the member 3 by a spring 27. The conveyer chain 4 for moving the units is driven by a wheel 5 on the shaft 8 driven from a motor 16, and is detachably. coupled to each unit by a link 22 pivoted to the arm 17 and each drum 34 for rotating the take-up bobbin 67, is geared to a shaft 44 driven by the driving belt or chain, which is shown as a steel band 49, engaging friction rollers 48 on the shafts 44 ; the band 49 extends around the machine and is driven by a pulley 50 on a sleeve on the shaft 8 driven from a second motor 16a. The supply bobbin 65 for each unit is mounted on a spindle 29 on the arm 18 and the winding mechanism is disposed in a box 30 integral with the arm 17 and formed with sides 31, 32 between which the drum 34, intermediate roller 38 and take-up package 67 are journalled, the package 67 being carried by an arm 36 pivoted on a bolt 37 in the side 32 ; the drum 34 is formed with a cam for actuating the thread guide 39 or it may be helically grooved for traversing the thread in which case the roller 38 is dispensed with. The lower end of the shaft 44 carries a bearing 45 which is connected to the box 30 by a spring which holds the roller 48 in contact with the band 49 which may be replaced by a rope or belt, the belt being flat or of double-wedge shape, or by a chain driven by a sprocket wheel and engaging sprocket wheels on the spindles 44 which in this case have the lower bearings 45 rigidly fixed to the box 30. The pulley 50 and the corresponding pulley 51 at the other end of the machine may be expanding pulleys. When the drum and package axis are disposed at right angles to the track, the drum is directly driven from the driving band 49 which engages between a pair of friction discs mounted on the drum axis. Ribbon winding is prevented by causing the package to be periodically lifted from the driving drum, the arm 36 carrying a pawl 62, Fig. 9, engaging ratchet teeth on an arm 59 rotatable on the bolt 37 and carrying a roller 60 running between rails 57, 58: as the diameter of the package increases the arm 36 lifts but continues in engagement with the arm 59, which drops and lifts the package from the drum 34 when the roller 60 engages a depression in the lower rail. An abutment 63 disengages the pawl 62 at the place where the packages are to be doffed and donned. In a modification, in which the units are arranged at right-angles to the conveyer chain 4, the arm 59 is pivoted independently of the arm 36 and is formed with teeth which engage teeth on the arm 36 and raises the package from the drum when the arm 59 is forced upwards by the rail 57. The machine may have a stand for an attendant at either or both ends with motor controls for regulating the rate of travel of the winding units and rate of winding.
