[Class 120 (ii)] In order to prevent the yarn deviating from the helical grooves of the drum of a drum winder, at the crossing points of the grooves, the movement of the yarn is assisted by an auxiliary swinging or rocking guide located in front of the drum and rocking in an approximately horizontal plane at such a distance from the drum that the distance between the limits of movement of the guide is equal to the distance between the crossing points of the grooves in the drum or of the outer crossing points thereof if there are more than two such points. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the guide 74 is formed in the periphery of a disc 70 rocked in a horizontal plane about the pivot 71 by a reciprocating rod 73 and pin-and-slot 72, the distance between the extreme points attained by the guide 74 being equal to the distance between the crossing points q of the split drum 38 driving the yarn package 67. In another form the yarn guide is formed by the cut-away part of a horizontal plate rocked by a cam in the gear box of the winding head or covered by a guard plate which has a slit through which the front edge of the plate projects. In a further form the guide is formed by an open-ended slot in a pivoted member rocked in a horizontal plane from a reciprocating shaft.
