Abstract
471,901. Shock - absorbing devices. DAVIES, E. A., and LYNAS, G. R. G. March 11, 1936, No. 7331. [Class 78 (ii)] A shock-absorber for bodies such as mine cages or skips, road or railway vehicles which are either suspended or subjected to tractive forces comprises a pair of arm and link couplings 4, 8 between the body 6 and the supporting or traction means 9, and a resilient damping means 10 which tends to keep each arm and link out of alignment. The arms are pivoted at 5 to the body 6 and carry nose-pieces 13, or rollers, which abut against slidable plates 12 receiving the ends of the springs 10. A fixed abutment 11 separates the inner ends of the springs. Pins 15 on the arms engage slots in the outer ends 14 of oppositely-threaded members 16, the inner ends of which are connected by a correspondingly-threaded sleeve 17. An initial tension can be imparted to the springs 10 by adjusting the sleeve 17. The spring damping means may be combined with dashpot mechanism.
