Abstract

[Class 40 (v)] [Also in Group XXXVI] In order to eliminate interaction between the control fields applied to the two pairs of deflecting plates in a cathode-ray tube, and to make the path of the electron stream strictly rectilinear, a compensating voltage is tapped off from the input to one pair of plates and is fed to the other. As shown in the Figure, the plates X, XI are connected to earth 1 through resistances 2, 3 in series. The other pair of plates Y, Y1 are connected through resistances 4 to the junction points 5 between resistances 2 and 3. A switch 6 enables the phase of the common coupling to be reversed. In alternative arrangements, (a) the resistances 2, 3 are inserted in the lead from one only of the plates ; and (h) the two resistances are replaced by a common potentiometer. The arrangement may be applied to a cathode-ray tube used as an indicator in wireless direction finding.
