Abstract

A soldering-flux comprises a solution of less than 10 per cent by weight of salicylic acid in a natural rosin together with a small percentage of a common flux or fluxes and a solvent or solvents therefor. The common flux or fluxes may be inorganic, e.g. zinc chloride or ammonium chloride, or organic, e.g. aniline hydrochloride or phthalic anhydride. Mixtures, e.g. eutectic mixtures, of inorganic fluxes or of organic fluxes are preferred. A suitable flux comprises a 5 per cent solution of salicylic acid in rosin together with about 2 per cent of aniline hydrochloride and a solvent such as ethylene glycol. The flux which is particularly advantageous for soldering joints in the electrical and radio industry may be used in paste or powder form or as the core of a solder wire. In making the flux, the rosin is heated to distil off fractions of lower boiling point and the required amount of salicylic acid is added to the hot residue, the common flux or fluxes and the solvent or solvents being added to the solution.
