Abstract

471,117. Fluid - friction brakes. PROPELLO INVENTIONS, Ltd., and YOXALL, J. Feb. 24, 1936, Nos. 5536 /36, 10555 /36, and 4920/37. [Class 103 (i)] A brake for an aircraft wheel comprises a fluid coupling having an element connected or connectible with the wheel and an element connected or connectible with a non-rotating member of the undercarriage. The fluid coupling shown in Fig. 1, comprises an element 10 fixed to the wheel within which is relatively rotatable an element 9. Normally the element 9 rotates idly with the element 10. To brake the wheel a piston 4 is operated by fluid-pressure which moves a toothed ring- 7 into engagement with a toothed ring 8 on the element 9 and thus locks the element 9 to the stationary axle 1, fluid friction braking then being developed by the action of the fluid of the coupling on the relatively rotating elements 9, 10. A fluid operated hand brake 14 brings the machine to rest. A modified form of fluid friction brake comprises alternately arranged discs 32, 33, Fig. 4, in a channel 23. The discs 32 are notable with the wheel 11 and the discs 33 are keyed to the stationary axle. The discs have perforations adapted to register at certain relative positions of the discs, which perforations are traversed by the liquid contained in the chamber 23, from which liquid a shearing effect is produced by relative rotation of the discs. The fluid is normally contained in a chamber 39 and flows into the chamber 23 when the wheel rotates at sufficiently high speed through openings 36. In a modification of this disc arrangement the liquid is always contained in the chamber 23 and the discs 33 are adapted to be unclutched from the axle. The fluidpressure means in the axle may operate a clutch adapted to disconnect either series of plates from the wheel hub or axle. Two or more additional series of plates may be used. The fluid coupling may be used to operate a friction brake. Specification 414,641 is referred to.
