Abstract
531,837. Brakes for vehicle twin-wheels. DIFFERENTIAL WHEEL CORPORATION. July 29, 1939, No. 22081. Convention date, July 29, 1938. [Class 103 (i)] In twin-wheels for road-vehicles, which are normally independently rotatable but are clutched together upon the application of a brake to one of them so that both wheels are braked, means are provided for conveying lubricant from the wheel bearings to the relatively movable parts concerned in effecting the clutching action. The device is the same as that described in Specification 529,912 and comprises an inner wheel 12 mounted by bearings 4, 5 on the axle 1 and an outer wheel 22 rotatably mounted upon the hub 11 of the wheel 12. A brake drum 51 is mounted with limited rotation relatively to the wheel 12 being secured by bolts 95, to a carrier 40 rotatable upon the hub part 39 of the wheel, the bolts and projections 94 on the carrier extending through slots in the wheel 12. An annular plate 96 is secured to the drum 51 and the carrier 41 by the bolts 95 and has a finger 103 projecting between the ends of a friction clutch split-ring 77 adapted to engage a drum 71 secured to the outer wheel 22. A projection 83 fixed to the wheel 12 also extends between the ends of the clutch ring 77. Interengaging lugs 87, 88 on the ring 77 and wheel 12 position the ring laterally. Upon application of brake shoes 55 by cam 57 to the drum 51 the wheel 12 tends to turn relatively to the drum causing relative displacement of the projections 83, 103 thus expanding the clutch ring 77 against the drum 71 so that the wheel 22 is in effect clutched to the wheel 12. Lubricant from the wheel bearings is directed by a ring 105 on the hub 21 through passages 107 in the parts 83, 88 and over the outer face of wheel 12 to the bearing surfaces of the wheel and plate 96 and escapes through apertures 96, 109. A disc 62 catches lubricant escaping from the inner end of the wheel hub and directs it to escape openings in the flat face of the drum 51. In a modified construction, passages are provided in the hub part 39 by which lubricant can flow from the chamber of the bearings 4 past the bearings 38 of the carrier 41 to the bearing surfaces between the carrier and the wheel 12. Excess lubricant escapes through openings 96, 109.
