Abstract
<FORM:0470859/IV/1> Lactic, citric, tartaric and butyric acids are concentrated by extraction of the aqueous acid in successive stages with a mixture of 70--90 parts methyl ethyl ketone with 30--10 parts of ether, the aqueous acid and solvent being used in equal volumes in each stage. The aqueous acid is admitted to a tank 1 and after treatment with an equal volume of solvent from a tank B, the aqueous layer is passed to a tank 2 and thence to tanks 3, 4, 5 in each of which it is treated with an equal volume of the same solvent. The extracts are collected in a tank D and pass thence through a vessel E in which any aqueous liquor is separated, and then through a heater F to a still G from which the solvent and about 8 per cent of water pass off by a pipe H and condenser I to the tank B. The exhausted aqueous liquor collects in a tank M and flows through a heater N to a still O, solvent vapour being returned by a pipe P to the condenser I.
