Abstract
A substance producing a decrease in blood pressure and which is resistant to boiling is obtained from urine by a process involving boiling the urine, or a fraction thereof containing the active substance, before, during or after the employment of the methods normally employed for separating from urine hormones which are insoluble in lipoid solvents. These methods are precipitation, adsorption, or diffusion and may be used separately or in combination. Ovarial hormone, if present, may be separated, for instance, by extraction with ether or by precipitation with alcohol. According to examples: (1) urine is boiled, treated successively with barium chloride and sodium sulphate to precipitate impurities and then with a large quantity of methyl alcohol to precipitate the active substance which is then centrifuged, washed with alcohol and ether, and dried; (2) urine is boiled, evaporated to dryness, the dry residue washed with alcohol and ether, taken up in water and treated with methyl alcohol to precipitate the active substance; (3) urine is treated with methyl alcohol and the precipitate washed with alcohol and ether, dissolved in water, and the solution subjected to dialysis or electro-dialysis and finally boiled; (4) urine is treated with charcoal to adsorb impurities, filtered, boiled, and treated with methyl alcohol to give a precipitate containing the active substance which is washed and dried.
