Abstract
470,611. Respiration - promoting apparatus. EISENMENGER, R. Feb. 2, 1937, Nos. 3073 and 3074. Convention dates, Dec. 23, 1936 and Dec. 31, 1936. [Class 81 (ii)] In respiration-promoting apparatus comprising a domed shield 1 strapped to the chest and placed alternately under pressure and vacuum by a pump connected thereto, the shield having a diaphragm 4 with one or more perforations stretched across its mouth, airtight contact with the body is effected by a peripheral pad 5 of soft material such as sponge rubber secured to a preferably flanged edge 1a of the shield and extending substantially below and radially beyond the edge. The pad is of trapezoid section and preferably comprises a body of large-pore sponge rubber faced on the under and outer sides with finepore sponge rubber 6, 7, the layer 6 having an extended tapered edge 9. The angular portion of the pad is stated to act as a valve preventing ingress of air during the suction period. The perforations in the diaphragm 4 may be controlled individually or collectively by upwardly opening non-return valves such as rubber, leather or other flexible flaps secured to the upper side of the diaphragm.
