Abstract
469,555. Splitting and decorticating bast and leaf fibres. FIBRE-PROCESSING, Ltd. Jan. 24, 1936, Nos. 2338 and 2339. Convention dates, Jan. 31, 1935 and Nov. 18, 1935. [Class 120 (i)] Apparatus for obtaining fibres from New Zealand flax (phorinium tenax) and like fibrous plants comprises a pair of oppositely rotating drums 3, 4, Fig. 3, having transverse rows of radially projecting and closely packed needles 22, Fig. 5, the needles of one drum being in circumferential alignment with each other and with the needles of the other drum and the rows of needles of the two drums passing alternately right through the material from opposite sides. The drums 3, 4 are formed with radial slots 15 which accommodate slidable comb blocks comprising a carrier 16, Fig. 6, and needle clamps 17, 19, the needles 22 being mounted in the space 21 and projecting between drum segments 28. Channels 30, Fig. 11, are provided in each drum to accommodate the needles of the co-operating drum. Rollers 25 are mounted on the members 16 and engage a race formed by ring members, the race being concentric with the drums over the greater part of its length so that the needle points 22 are normally retracted but having a cam surface so that the needles are projected outwards over the stripping portion of the apparatus. The material is passed successively through feed rollers 1, 2, the stripping drums 3, 4, feed rollers 7, 8 and clearing conveyers 11, 12. Licking rollers 5, 6, 9, 10 comprising moulded strips of rubber 42 of channel section, Fig. 8, are provided to clear the drums 3, 4 and the rollers 7, 8. The conveyers 11, 12 comprise sprocket chains having rubber licking vanes 48 of channel section and formed with serrated edges. Water is sprayed on to the material while between the conveyers 11, 12. The distance between opposing rows of needles is adjustable and the drums 3, 4 and conveyers 11, 12 are driven more quickly than their respective pairs of feed rollers.
