[Class 94 (i)] In the packeting of cigarettes and other articles in cartons of the slide and shell type, the tuck-in flap 11, Fig. 2, or flaps are first folded up about the crease 13 and then the end wall 10 is erected to cause a consequential movement of the flap 11 over the cigarettes, as shown in Fig. 3. One or both ends of the slide may be dealt with in this way. When the batches of cigarettes are provided with a partial foil wrapping, it is necessary before bending up the flap to separate the projecting end of the foil from the flap, on which it is initially disposed, to prevent crumpling. This is attained by bending the flap down by moving it past a tongue piece 22, Fig. 6, having an inclined wall 22a while the leading end 24 of a folding bar 23 disengages the foil and causes it to ride up inside the bar. Meanwhile, the flap 11 is engaged by a plough shaped folder 27 and turned over at the crease line 13 about a corner 36 on to a surface 26 at an angle of about 60‹ to the lower horizontal surface 25. The final turning up of the end wall 10 and flap 11 is effected by fixed plates with inclined surfaces. The folding elements may be mounted so as to be capable of adjustment with relation to a rotating turret carrying the slides. The turret may be driven as described in Specification 466,176. In modifications, the slide may be moved in a rectilinear path, or the slide may be stationary and the folders subjected to rotary, oscillatory or other movements. In another method of operation, the end wall may be partially bent up simultaneously with the erection of the flap.
