[Classes 83 (i) and 83 (ii)] Casting composite articles.-Before casting a steel pipe &c. in a centrifugal mould a thin layer of a metal of lower melting point, such as iron, is poured in. As the iron layer, though wholly or partly solid, is at a high temperature it becomes fused to the steel and the outer layer of steel can shrink without stress. The inside of the steel casting may be cooled by gas from a set of radial nozzles moved longitudinally. The casting may be annealed and the outer layer may be machined away. One trough, two separate troughs, or a divided trough arranged to pour tangentially and heated ladles may be used. Although sand lined moulds may be used water-cooled chills are preferred.
