Abstract

The deterioration of rubber with age is retarded by the addition to the mix of a resinous body formed by treating 2 : 2 : 4-trimethyl - 1 : 2 - dihydroquinoline with an aqueous solution of a chloride, bromide, or iodide of zinc, aluminium, or di- or tri-valent iron. The resinification takes place when the reactants are vigorously stirred together at 80--100 DEG C. Unchanged trimethyldihydroquinoline and any low boiling oil which may be formed is removed by distillation and the hard and brittle residue is used as the anti-oxidant. In an example, 2 : 2 : 4-trimethyl-1 : 2-dihydroquinoline is stirred with an aqueous solution of ferric chloride at 90 DEG C. for 40 hours. The product is distilled in vacuo, to yield a brittle resinous residue m.p. 65--70 DEG C. Specification 450,323 is referred to.ALSO:The deterioration of rubber with age is retarded by the addition to the mix of a resinous body formed by treating 2 : 2 : 4-trimethyl-1 : 2-dihydroquinoline with an aqueous solution of a bromide, chloride or iodide of zinc, aluminium or di- or tri-valent iron.
