Abstract

Synthetic lacquers similar to Japanese lacquers are manufactured by oxypolymerization of the condensation products of hydroquinone with heavy ethylenic alcohols. The condensation is effected by the action of dehydrating agents, e.g. anhydrous zinc chloride or concentrated sulphuric acid. In an example, hydroquinone is heated with oleyl alcohol in the presence of anhydrous zinc chloride, and the product, with or without purification by vacuum distillation, is oxypolymerized, if desired by heating and in the presence of metallic salts, e.g. of iron, cobalt, lead, aluminium, nickel, manganese or chromium. These salts may be added in solution, e.g. in acetone in the case of ferric chloride or in toluene in the case of iron linolenate, or the condensation product may be mixed with the salt in the form of an emulsion in its aqueous solution. The lacquers may be coloured and they possess electric insulating properties.ALSO:Synthetic lacquers similar to Japanese lacquers are manufactured by oxypolymerization of the condensation products of hydroquinone with heavy ethylenic alcohols.
