Abstract

468,568. Glass manufacture. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and GABOR, D. Jan. 7, 1936, No. 572. [Class 56] An electric discharge lamp with a gaseous filling of metallic vapours which attack quartz or glass has an envelope composed of, or lined with, fused calcium-aluminium phosphates, part of the calcium being replaceable by magnesium. The general formula of the vitreous material is expressed by the formula X CaO, (1-X) MgO, Y Al2O3, and Z P2O5, where X may be from 0À4 to 1, Y from 0À1 to 3, and Z from 0À05 to 0À25. A mixture of 40À3 per cent of calcium orthophosphate, 33À1 per cent of calcium oxide, and 26À6 per cent of aluminium oxide, when fused at about 1550‹ C., forms a vitreous composition having the formula CaO, 0À55 Al2O3, 0À18 P2 O5.
