Abstract
An insulating material suitable for use in situations exposed to electric arcs, under the action of which the material gives off gas or vapour, consists of artificial resin containing nitrogen as a chemical constituent. The material is preferably one having the nitrogen combined with hydrogen in the molecule, for instance a carbamide resin such as those known under the Registered Trade Marks "Pollopas" and "Resopal". In some cases there may be added fillers such as ammonium carbonate, ammonium acetate, ammonium alum, hydrazine compounds, or urea, which may be dissolved in the resin, or incorporated in the colloidal state or in the form of grains. Alternatively, stable metal oxides, of the earth or alkaline earth metals, for example, or fibrous material such as cellulose or asbestos thread, or animal fibres such as hair, wool, silk, leather, skin, or horn may be used as fillers. The resins may be made by moulding or pressing with subsequent heat treating, or by casting, and may be given a metal or other core for mechanical strength. A layer of resin may be applied, before hardening, to supports of hard paper, hard fabric, fibre, or ceramic or other material. When an insulating member with resin filler is employed, the former may comprise fibrous material held together by a binder which is the same or as similar to that used for the protective layer, for example, hard paper or carbamide resin. Rods and tubes may be made by winding paper, cotton, linen, wool, or silk saturated with the resin, and pheno-plast is employed where considerable mechanical strength is necessary. Specification 354,174, [Group V], is referred to.
