Abstract
466,663. Friction-testing apparatus. SHAW, F. W., and SHAW, H. Sept. 18, 1936, No. 17975/35. [Class 106 (ii)] In apparatus of the type in which the coefficient of friction is computed from the frictional force and the load producing it, both of these forces are measured by a diaphragm D displacing liquid into a pressure gauge P. The gauge may be connected directly and not act through a capillary tube as shown. The bearing b to be tested forms a sleeve on a rotatable shaft a and is loaded by a lever E having a fulcrum F and connected to the bearing by a linkage 1, 2, 3. The end of the lever E bears against the diaphragm D. A cam ring R rotated by a handle H serves to apply the load, part of which may be furnished by a weight W. The force of friction is measured by a link and lever system L, E<1>, the lever E<1> rocking about a fulcrum F<1> and acting on a diaphragm D<1>. Part of the force may be balanced by a weight W<1>. The pressure gauges P may be of the self-recording type.
