Abstract

466,104. Scavengers' vehicles. FISHER, G. L. Nov. 13, 1935, No. 31459. [Class 108 (i)] [Also in Group XXX] In vehicles which are loaded by means of a screw conveyer, substantial clearance is left all around between the periphery of the screw and its casing. This is stated to permit the passage of rags or of articles such as small bottles, tins, or lengths of metal pipe without stopping the screw, the articles being bent or broken in cases where they are too long to pass into the casing otherwise. In the form shown the vehicle is provided with a partition 3 attached to a movable floor 2 operable by hand or power to discharge through a rear door 4. Carried by, and movable with the partition, is a casing 5 surrounding two parallel conveyer screws 6 rotating in the same direction. A claw clutch 12 connects the conveyers to driving-gear 10, 13 operated from the motor 9 when the partition is fully retracted. The casing 5 carries telscopic or interchangeable extensions 14 the length of which is varied in accordance with the nature of the material being loaded. The forward portion of the casing is formed as a hopper 7 into which the material is tipped through openings at each side of the vehicle. Fig. 3 shows the two screws, each in this case of 15 inches diameter and having a clearance of 1 inch between them and 2¥ inches between each screw and the casing.
