Abstract

464,959. Tandem &c. bicycles. PRATT, F. H., and BUTLER, C. April 21, 1936, No. 11376. [Class 136 (iii)] In order to reduce the wheel base of tandem and like multiple bicycles provided with a direct drive, the tubular chain stay 1 on the chain-wheel side terminates short of the inner rear chain wheel 2, and is joined to the rear bottom bracket A by a flat solid connecting- piece 3 arranged with its larger dimension vertical, the rear road wheel 4 overlapping the rear chain wheels. The connecting-piece 3 is preferably integral with the bottom bracket A and formed with a lug at its free end for welding into the end of the chain stay 1. The body of the bottom bracket A is curved in at the rear, as shown at 7, to enable the wheel 4 to be as far forward as possible. The sockets 10, 11 for the rear seat tube 8 and the bottom tube 12 are approximately at right-angles to one another, and the lower part of the tube 8 follows the curve of the rear wheel 4 as shown in Fig. 2.
