Abstract
464,595. Knitting. BATA, J. A. Feb. 25, 1936, No. 5594. IClass 74 (ii)] A method of rendering separable successive hose knitted by a two-cylinder-type hosieryknitting machine comprises the operations of knitting the yarn of which the hosiery 'is composed into a separation-course c, which may be cut and withdrawn, and then following by one or more courses of hose-top reinforcement. Upon actuation of the lever train 3.... 7 by a cam 2 on a drum 1, a lever 8 is intermittently raised and lowered, by a cam 23 driven by the shaft 21 of the machine, to actuate a pawl and ratchet device 15, 18 to drive a shaft 14 to which is attached the upper pattern chain drum 26. The pattern chain 28 carries pattern studs which actuate levers 30..33 which operate, respectively, the transfer device 36 ... 38 of the lower cylinder, the needle cam member, a brush 48 to open the needle latches, and the transfer device 56 for the upper cylinder. A further set of needle and sinker cams is provided to effect the desired motion of those instruments. After plain knitting a two cast-off courses b and a separation course c are produced by the operation of levers 30 .. 32, while in continued operation of the machine an ordinary course d is knitted, followed by one or more rows of border knitting e, one or more rows of 1 : 1 knitting f, and finally two courses g, of halfcardigan tuck rib, to prevent the fabric from running down. On withdrawing the thread of course c the hose-tops are separated already suitably finished. Following the knitting of the courses g, the pattern chain 28 becomes inoperative and knitting continues in known manner. The pattern chain mechanism may be replaced by pattern cams. The rear wales of the fabric are shown hatched in Fig. 5.
