464,381. Vehicle wheels; rollers. WESTINGHOUSE ELECTRIC & MANUFACTURING CO. Sept. 2, 1936, No. 24025. Convention date, Sept. 20, 1935. [Classes 144 (i) and 144 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] A roller or wheel, such as a guide roller of an escalator, comprises a plurality of members arranged in a circle to form a tread, the said members being disposed transversely to the periphery of the tread and compressed into a compact unit, a web of fibrous material impregnated with a binder and moulded to the inner face of the tread, the binder penetrating the inner portion of the tread to unite the tread and web, and a hub member disposed in the centre of the web. In the embodiment shown, the roller comprises a tread formed of sheets 12 of fabric, paper, leather, &c., a web 15 of comminuted material impregnated with phenolic resin, and a hub 16, the whole being secured together by moulding under heat and pressure. When the tread is made of fibrous material, a powdered solid lubricant such as talc, starch, or pulverized graphite, is rolled into the material to reduce chafing between the sheets.
