[Class 80 (i).] A gear wheel or blank has a rim comprising a strip of woven cloth coiled edgewise on itself and united by an adhesive, the inner edge of the strip having spaced projections ; and the web is composed wholly or mainly of textile fabric or fibres united by an adhesive, material of the web being located in the spaces among the projections for uniting the rim to the web. In the form shown in Figs. 2 and 5, the rim is wound from a serrated strip 1 of cotton duck cut from a plain strip as shown in Fig. 1, and impregnated with a phenolic condensation product. The projections 4 on the strip lie in staggered formation inside the rim. A preformed web and hub 6 are moulded on to the rim in a press 10, Fig. 5, at a temperature sufficient to mature the adhesive. In a modification, the hub and web are formed from loose materials placed in the mould and compressed to shape by the plunger. The mould is provided with shoulders 19 so that the rim projects slightly from the web to facilitate machining. In the form shown in Fig. 11, the rim is wound from a strip cut from a plain strip as shown in Fig. 9, so as to comprise alternate projections and recesses, and the preformed web 27 is shaped to fit over the resulting teeth 25 on the rim. In a further modification, Fig. 13, a plain strip is cut and doubled flat so as to have projections 32 on one side and recesses 33 on the other. A ring of rubber or rubberized cloth may be interposed between the web and the rim to produce a sounddeadening effect. A metal hub as described in Specification 359,372 may be provided.
