Abstract

463,904. Valves. BROUGHTON, A. E. April 21, 1936, No. 11394. [Class 135] [Also in Group VIII] The suction apparatus of papermaking machines includes automatic valves V, Fig. 1, which shut off suction from a machine when the suction in a box 9 gives out, as on pulp web rupture, and automatic control of the suction during operation, by valves 27. The valve stem 27a of the valve 27 screws adjustably into a sleeve 31 sliding in a piston 30 in a cylinder 29, the sleeve and piston being normally held in the positions shown, by springs 38, 35 respectively. If suction in a box 9 becomes too high, atmospheric pressure forces the piston 30 upwards to close the valve 27, further upward movement opening an annular passage 30b which allows air to enter and reduce the suction. The degree of suction is adjusted by screwing, e.g. through gears &c., the sleeve 31 on the valve stem 27a. The valve V which is somewhat similar to the valve 27, but works oppositely, closes when suction of the couch roll 11, to the pipe 19 of which its cylinder is connected, is substantially reduced. Further, the valve V has no spring 38 or annular opening 30c, the adjustable sleeve being held axially in the piston.
