Abstract

463,521. Sewing-machines. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (International Button Hole Sewing Machine Co.) June 8, 1936, No. 15980. [Class 112] In a machine for attaching buttons by stitching, the clamp for the button comprises at least three jaws relatively movable towards or away from each other, and gripping the button at points equally spaced round its periphery. The jaws are preferably moved in unison by racks engaging a common pinion. The button-holding assembly comprises upper and lower plates 29, 30 held in spaced relation by studs 31, 32, 33, 34. The presser foot 37 is secured to the under plate. Three slides 39, 40, 41 carrying the button-clamping jaws 58. The slide 39 is guided in a way 42 formed on the underside of the top plate 29. The slides 40, 41 have pairs of slots 43, 44 and 47, 48 respectively sliding on rollers on the studs 33, 31 and 32, 34. The slides 39, 40, 41 have racks 51, 52, 53 which co-operate with a common pinion 54, so that the slides move in unison to clamp the button. The slides are normally urged into button-clamping relation by a torsion spring 65 coiled about a pin 66 carried by the top plate 29 and urging the slide 39 forwardly. An abutment screw 70 engaging the lug 71 at the rear of the slide 39 forms a stop. A bell-crank lever 72 pivoted on the pin 63 can be operated by a treadle to force the slide 39 back and release the button.
