[Class 89 (iii)] A fastener-inserting mechanism or device is associated with an electric power unit comprising an electromagnet in such a way that the device is actuated by a pivoted arm, directly coupled to the electromagnet, whenever the latter is energized. A base 10, which may be secured to a bench, is provided with side flanges 12 and a crosspiece 13 defining two recesses. In the forward recess 14 a stapling device of the desk type is secured removably by nuts 20. The rearward recess has uprights 21 which support the core 60 and coil 61 of an electromagnet, and uprights 22 to which an arm 32 is pivoted. The arm is raised by a spring 40 and carries the armature 51 of the electromagnet with some freedom for rocking movement, whilst its forward end carries a rubber button 41 positioned to overlie the operating knob 42 of the stapling device. The coil 61 is connected to a source of power through a switch positioned to be operated by an operator's foot. Whenever the switch is closed, the armature 51 is attracted to the core 60, and the arm 32 is rocked to actuate the driver arm 29 of the stapling device. The power unit is enclosed in a casing 45 provided with lateral guides for the armature 51, and the arm 32 carries a rubber buffer 44. Two or more power units may be operated by a common switch, or several fastener-inserting devices may be actuated by a single power unit, and may be adjustable on a base to vary the spacing of the fasteners applied by them.
