Abstract

<PICT:0463437/IV/1> Loosely felted wood - pulp sheets B are chipped, or sheared and split into thin, narrow lengths x for chemical treatment by feeding them over a fixed blade C &c. towards a rotating tool comprising short, staggered blades D, which form at each stroke, the lengths x, each of which is thinner than the sheet B. The pieces may be \ba1/8\be--2 ins. by 0,015 ins. by 0,01 ins. and may be treated with (a) nitrating mixtures as for cotton, or (b) nitric acid, sulphuric acid, and water in percentages 28, 55 and 17, or (c) at 30--40 DEG C. for 4 hours using acetic anhydride, acetic acid, and sulphuric acid in stated amounts, or (d) glacial acetic, butyric and sulphuric acids and acetic anhydrides.
