Abstract

463,408. Vacuum cleaners. BRITISH VACUUM CLEANER & ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and FRAME, W. J. Aug. 23, 1935, No. 23703. [Class 8 (i)] In a suction cleaning and sweeping machine of the kind in which a rotary brush is mounted in the floor suction nozzle and a clutch is provided for interrupting the drive to the brush at will, a friction clutch element 18 is mounted on the spindle 6 of the fan 2 which may be driven by an electric motor or by other means, the element 18 having a pin-and-slot connection 19 with the shaft 6 and being urged by a spring 20 against a friction clutch element 17 carried by a shaft 7 having a pulley 8 which by a belt 9 drives the spindle 4 of the brush 21 mounted in the nozzle 5. The shaft 7 is mounted in bearings 11 in a sleeve 12 mounted within a tube 13 enclosing the clutch parts and mounted in a member 14 having an operating handle 15 working in an inclined slot 16. The clutch can disengage if the brush jams ; on movement of the handle 15, the sleeve 14 and the shaft 7 carried thereby are moved axially so that the driven part 17 of the clutch is moved away from the driving part 18 and the drive to the brush discontinued. One or more brushes may be provided on the brush spindle 4 which is removably mounted in the nozzle 5, each end of the spindle being carried in ball bearings, the housings of which are mounted in spring clips 10.
