Abstract
786,813. Floor treating machines. EBERSOLD, T. Aug. 19, 1955, No. 23956/55. Class 138(1). A floor polishing or similar machine having one or more motor driven cleaning members (e.g. brushes) rotating in a horizontal plane, comprises a driving plate 9, Fig. 1, adapted to have the cleaning member 13 or members attached to its underside, the or each member 13 being of elongated substantially rectangular shape and supported so that the length of the or each member 13 determines the working width of the machine, the length of the or each.member 13 being at least five times greater than its width, the driving plate 9 being operatively connected to a vertical drive shaft 4 of a driving motor 2, 3, mounted above the plate 9 so as to be driven eccentrically and in addition being supported elastically on the machine by tension springs 12, in such a way that it is displaced through an elliptical path under the control of the springs 12. The machine which may be used for waxing, polishing or shaving a floor, according to the nature of the brush, comprises a housing 1 for the electric motor 2, 3, the vertical shaft 4 of which carries an eccentric peg 7 mounted in a bearing 8 carrier in the generally rectangular-shaped plate 9. A rearward extension 9a of the plate 9 is connected at 10 to, and centrally between, two springs 12, the outer ends of which are connected to attachments 11 on the housing 1. A generally rectangular-shaped brush is resiliently and detachably mounted on the plate 9, Fig. 2, by pegs 92 on the plate engaging in rubber sockets 93 on the brush backing. Rubber pegs 94 on the back of the brush also engage the underside of the plate 9. The handle 16 of the machine is connected to a socket 14 detachably carrier or the housing 1 by a screw 15. A downwardly bent portion of the handle may be provided with a roller or sliding shoe to be engageable with the floor surface and the roller or shoe may be adjustable for height on the handle. The handle shown may, in a modification, be replaced by a handle in the form of a vacuum cleaner, whereby dirt may be sucked from the floor. Owing to the resilient connection of the plate extension 9a with the housing 1 at 10, any point on the brush performs an elliptical orbital movement. In the modified embodiment shown in Fig. 12, the driving plate 109 is resiliently connected to the housing 1 by two pairs of springs 112, 212 the outer ends of the springs being connected at 111, 211 respectively to the housing. In a further modification two brushes 13 are carried by the drive plate and arranged parallel to each other on opposite sides of the motor shaft.
