Abstract

Vat-dyes are prepared by treating Bz-trioxy-or Bz - tetrahydroxydibenzanthrones with alkylating or aralkylating agents. Suitable starting materials are obtainable according to Specifications 461,885 and 462,658. Suitable alkylating or aralkylating agents are monohalogen or polyhalogen alkyls or aralkyls, alkyl or aralkyl esters of sulphuric acid or of sulphonic acids such as p-toluenesulphonic acid and formaldehyde; alkylation or aralkylation may be carried out in stages, mixed ethers being obtained if desired. In examples: (1) Bz2.Bz2<1>.Bz3-trioxydibenzanthrone (prepared by heating the Bz2.Bz2<1>-quinone with 90 per cent sulphuric acid in trichlorbenzene) is treated with p-toluenesulphonic acid methyl ester or ethyl ester, or monomethylglycol ester, or mono-n-butylglycol ester, or chlorethyl ester, or with benzotrichloride, or with paraformaldehyde (or formaldehyde); in this latter case the product may be further treated with a methylating agent such as p-toleuenesulphonic acid methyl ester: (2) Bz2.Bz2<1>.Bz3.Bz3<1>-tetrahydroxydibenzanthrone (prepared by nitrating dibenzanthrone-Bz2.Bz2<1>-quinone, reducing the dinitro compound, oxidizing with ferric sulphate, treating the product with 80 per cent sulphuric acid, and reducing with sodium bisulphite) is treated with p-toluenesulphonic acid methyl ester and chlorethyl ester; (3) dibromo-Bz2.Bz2<1>.Bz3.Bz3<1>-tetrahydroxydibenzanthrone (obtainable according to example 4 of Specification 461,885) is treated with p-toluenesulphonic acid methyl ester; (4) the product obtained by treating brominated dimethoxydibenzanthrone (cf. example 1 of Specification 205,304, [Class 2 (iii)]), with sulphuric acid monohydrate in presence of ammonium vanadate, followed by reduction with sodium bisulphite is treated wit p-toluenesulphonic acid methyl ester. The products dye blue-green to violet dyeings. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 276,768, [Class 2 (iii)].
