Abstract

462,501. Hardening rails. SOC. ANON. DES HAUTS FOURNEAUX DE LA CHIERS. April 29, 1936, No. 12155. Convention date, May 3, 1935. [Class 72] [Also in Group XXX] In apparatus for hardening rails of the kind described in Specification 450,884, the arms on which the rails to be treated are secured, are provided with steps and devices for holding two or more rails so that such rails may be hardened simultaneously, such stepped arrangement ensuring the straightening of the members treated if they have a tendency to curve and also the rapid clearing of the roller table from feeding the rails to be treated. The arm 2, Fig. 1, is provided with three steps having abutments 3, 4, 5, and the rails when fed from the roller table AV are placed one at a time by members 15 in the stops and are secured against the abutments of the steps by the engagement' with their flanges of hooks 6, 7, 8 which are connected to and operated by hydraulic rocking cylinders such as 17. The hook 6 is connected by links 19, 20 and is held in engagement with the rails by an adjustable stop 21. The hooks 7, 8 are similarly held in engagement with the rails. When the rails are secured in position on the arm 2, the latter is turned until the head of each rail is immersed in separate hardening tanks 30, 31, 32 supplied with cold water from header 33, the water for each rail passing into a chamber 35, then through a perforated plate 36<1> into a chamber 36 and then through a second perforated plate 37 and so in contact with the head of the immersed rail. The chambers 35, 36 are formed by partition plates 38 which also support the plate 36<1>, 37. When the rails have been hardened, the arm 2 is moved upwardly to the position shown in Fig. 4, and a member 41 movably mounted on the yard AR is moved under the rail 1 the nose 42 of the rail 41 being moved upward. The hook 6 is now released by the operation of the piston in the cylinder 17 and the rail deposited in the member 41 which is then moved to deposit the rail on the yard AR. The rails II and III are then released similarly one after the other and placed on the yard AR. The arm 2 now is then moved back to the position shown in Fig. 1 for the reception of further rails.
