Hardening.-In a method of Hardening the heads of railway rails in agitated or flowing water without the rail head and the level of the water being moved relatively to one another, the formation of steam round the rail head being prevented by the - regulation of the speed of the water. The hot rail is straightened and then clamped in a frame before immersion in the water. The water 2 in the tank 1 may be agitated by rotating drums 4 provided - with vanes 5, which move the water towards the head of the rail 3. Alternatively, the water may be agitated by a moving iron grid. In a modification, water under pressure is forced out through a slot in a pipe 8, an overflow 9 keeping the water in the tank at the same level. In another form, a plate with a narrow slot directly under the, rail head is provided between the latter and the slotted pipe or two slotted pipes may be provided delivering water over partitions into a chamber formed by the latter, a slotted plate being provided in the chamber under the rail for the discharge of the water.
