Abstract

Diaminoalcohols of the formula RCHOHCHR<1> NR<11>R<111>, in which R is a radicle of the benzene series, R<1> is hydrogen or methyl, R<11> is a dialkylaminoalkyl group, and R<111> is hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radicle, and prepared by treating monoamino alcohols of the formula RCHOHCHR<1>NHR<111> with aliphatic dialkylamino alcohols in the presence of a dehydrating agent, such as zinc chloride or phosphorus pentoxide. The reaction may be effected at a raised temperature in the presence or absence of a solvent such as toluene. Examples are given in which (1) ephedrine and dimethylaminoethanol yield 1 - phenyl - 2 - (methyl) (dimethylaminoethyl)aminopropanol - 1; (2) ephedrine and diethylaminoethanol yield 1-phenyl-2-(methyl)(diethylaminoethyl)aminopropanol-1; (3) ephedrine and 4-dimethylaminobutanol - 1 yield 1 - phenyl - 2 - (methyl) (dimethylaminobutyl)aminopropanol-1; (4) 1-phenyl-2-benzylaminopropanol-1 and diethylaminoethanol yield 1-phenyl-2-(benzyl)(diethylaminoethyl)aminopropanol-1; (5) 1-phenyl-2-aminopropanol-1 and diethylaminoethanol yield 1-phenyl-2-diethylaminoethylaminopropanol-1.
