Abstract

461,544. Vehicle opening-tops. HUGHES, T. T., and STANFORD, J. J. Aug. 18, 1936, No. 22724. [Class 108 (i)] A sliding roof comprises a rectangular hollow frame with a slot on the inside and one or both ends carrying a roller upon which a flexible sheet is adapted to be wound, the free end of the sheet being provided with means for locking it in closed or partially open position. The frame comprises side members 1 and front and rear members 2. One or both end members are constructed to house a roller 9 upon which a flexible cover 3 is adapted to be wound or unwound and the side members 1 together with. an end member 2 if not used to house a roller 9 is formed of the shape shown having a slot into which the edges of the cover 3 pass, flanges 1<a>, 2b being provided to form a track. The end member for the roller 9 is made in two parts hinged together at 2c and the front edge of the cover 3 is provided with strips or a bent strip 11 upon the underside of which the securing bolts 12 are mounted. These bolts are operated by a central disc or crank 13 and handle 14, the ends of the bolts 12 being adapted to enter recesses 1<b> in the side members 1 to secure the cover 4 in the closed or partially closed position. Where two covers 3 are employed mounted on rollers carried by the end members 2 of the frame, they are adapted to meet and the end strips 11 are provided with one or more overlapping portions. Conduits 7 are provided to drain the frame and the rollers are spring controlled.
