Abstract

461,131. Treating wood. ANGLO PENCIL CO., Ltd., and SMITH, M. July 10, 1935, No. 19688. [Class 140] Wood &c., particularly for pencil slats, is caused to absorb a softening medium and is then subjected to the action of steam, under suitable pressure, to cause the softening medium to percolate or impregnate the wood cells. As shown, a bundle of pencil slats 1 is placed endways upon an absorbent felt &c. 5 fed with softening medium, e.g. a mixture of equal parts of cod and paraffin oils, from a trough 3, and is then removed and allowed to drain. After draining, the slats are transferred to an autoclave and subjected to steam under such pressure that the softening medium is caused to percolate the cellular structure of the wood without being vaporized. Immediately after removal from the autoclave, the slats are preferably quenched in an aqueous cedar oil emulsion.
