Abstract

460,470. Electromagnetic interrupters. OAK MANUFACTURING CO. Dec. 23, 1935, No. 35568. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1934. [Class 38 (v)] An electromagnetic interrupter which may be used in connection with the high tension supply units of motor car radio sets comprises a flat flexible reed member to which is secured an offset and substantially rigid arm carrying a contact adjacent its free end, this contact being arranged to engage a contact carried by a relatively stationary and substantially yielding member. As shown in Fig. 1, a flexible reed 20 is mounted at its lower end between the limbs of a U-shaped yoke 1 which carries at its upper end a core 3 and winding 5. The reed carries an armature 6 at its free end adjacent the laterally displaced polepiece 4 of the core 3 and carries an interrupter contact 22 and controlled or working contacts 26, 27. The latter are mounted on rigid arms 70, 71 riveted to the reed at their lower ends and bent so as to have offset upper contact-carrying portions. The contacts 28, 29 with which contacts 26, 27 co-operate during the vibration of the reed are carried by flexible springy arms 40. 41 which are, however, stiff enough to ensure that their natural frequency is substantially higher than that of the reed 20. Thus, during the vibration of the reed the contacts 26, 28 and 27, 29 remain in engagement until the mid-position is being passed when a quick-break is obtained. The interrupter contact 21 is carried on an upwardly extending arm formed in a cut-out portion of the reed. A rigid arm 74 riveted to the reed between contact arms 70, 71 bears against the arm carrying the contact 21 at one side so that a rapid break between it and the fixed adjustable contact 23 is obtained. The interrupter contacts are normally in engagement and owing to this and the lateral displacement of polepiece 4 the interrupter is self-starting. The interrupter structure is mounted on an insulating base formed with downwardlyextending plug members 85 and is surrounded by a metal casing 88. The upper end of the interrupter carries a soft rubber cap 100.
