Abstract
459,874. Bowden mechanism; flexible shafting. ARENS CONTROLS, Ltd., and CLARKE, F. A., 2, South Wharf, Praed Street, London. July 16, 1935, No. 20308. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii)] In flexible power transmission devices having a compound flexible cable for the transmission of both tension and compression, and in some cases torsion, and comprising an inner cable 8, Fig. 2, surrounded by contacting annular members 9, the whole sliding in a casing 7, one or both ends of the casing has a guide 15 mounted to move on the exterior thereof to which guide the compound cable is directly or indirectly attached. The compound cable is attached to a stepped member 13 having a hollow screw stem 12 which passes through a bore 16 in guide 15 which abuts the member 13 at 14. In modifications, (1) the member 13 is screwed into guide 15 ; (2) is made integral therewith. The casing 7 may be of the flexible form described in Specification 361,221. Where the casing 7 is stiff, flexible joints such as 23, Fig. 1, may be interposed between parts thereof near the ends to permit of angular movement. Such a joint may comprise a sleeve 24, Fig. 7 with coils touching one another and soldered to the ends of casing 7. In a modification, the ends of the sleeve are secured to the casing by ferrules. The casing 7 may be other than circular. Rotary movement may be transmitted; e.g. the guide member may engage the casing through a coarse pitch screw thread, and be connected rigidly or loosely with the inner cable.
