Abstract

308,171. Arens, C. A. March 17, 1928, [Convention date]. Flexible shafts.-A cable 5, surrounded by a coiled spring 4 and with rigid end members 2, 6, slides in a guide tube 1, being adapted to transmit tension or pressure, as when applied to control a carburetter, the ignition &c. on a motor vehicle &c., or to transmit rotation for winding a watch or clock &c. Pressure is transmitted through the spring. To transmit rotation, the ends of the spring are soldered to the rigid end members 2, 6, which themselves are soldered &c. to the cable and may be threaded to receive stop nuts 7, 8. The end member 2, which may be provided with lubricating recesses 3, passes into the guide tube extending nearly to the bend. At the other end, the cable and spring may extend beyond the guide tube, Fig. 2, to allow lateral play of the end attachment 6 as when connected to a lever 9. Alternatively, Fig. 4, long sleeve members at each end of the cable may work in the guide tube 1 with a flexible extension 4<1> connected to one end by a coupling sleeve 12<11>. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the spring 4 may be replaced by a series of washers. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
