Abstract
459,814. Moulding wheel tyres. FIRESTONE TYRE & RUBBER CO., Ltd., Great West Road, Brentford, Middlesex.- (Firestone Tire & Rubber Co.; Akron, Ohio, U.S.A.) Jan. 9, 1936, No. 804. [Class 87 (ii)] A tyre band is shaped into tyre form and an expansible core or air-bag is inserted therein with the aid of centrifugal force. An airbag 47 connected to a source of subatmospheric pressure is drawn downwardly by a verticallymovable claw 46 into a cylinder mounted for rotation with a platen 54 having radiallyadjustable tyre-bead engaging clamps 57. A tyre band in " flat " or cylindrical form is then placed over the clamps on the platen, and a similar platen 81 is lowered till its clamps 85 engage the other bead of the band. The cylinder with the air-bag and the platens are rotated at the same speed, while the claw 46 raises the air-bag. The centrifugal force causes the band to assume tyre shape, as shown, and the air-bag to be placed in position, as shown in broken lines. Air pressure is applied to the bag, which, with the tyre is removed by moving the clamps inwardly by means of hand wheels 61, 88 associated with the platens.
