519,873. Pneumatic wheel'tyres. HEINTZ, J. C. Aug. 3, 1938, Nos. 22948 and 22949. Convention dates, Sept. 13, 1937 and April 6, 1938. [Class 144 (ii)] [Also in Group V] In re-treading tyres, a new tread 19 is applied around the perimeter of a worn tyre 10 between upstanding ribs 18 formed .at the shoulders 14 by removing a portion of the worn tread to form a channel between the ribs 18. The apparatus comprises a heater 22, unilanged mould rings 24, 25, and side pressure rings 27. The tyre is mounted on a rim 20 and expanded by an inflated bag 21. The mould rings are formed with ribs 30, 31 for moulding grooves and ribs on the new tread. The mould is convex and its edges engage the ribs 18 at the shoulders and seal the tyre against flow of rubber from the new tread, the sealing being assisted by further internal expansion of the tyre. In a modification, the step of channelling the old rubber tread is omitted. The re-treaded tyre has a composite anti-skid wearing surface of old and new rubber which has the full width of the original tread.
