Abstract

459,050. Mechanical toys. SCHMID, M., 80A, Furtherstrasse, Nuremberg, Germany. June 24, 1935, No. 18082. [Class 132 (iii)] A toy vehicle or figure comprises steering mechanism for causing the vehicle to travel in a straight line or a curve or in contact with the edge of a surface or for preventing it falling over the edge of a surface. The vehicle a, Figs. 1 and 2, has a running wheel e keyed on the rear axle d driven by a spring motor b, a rear wheel f loosely mounted on a separate stub axle g, a front wheel axle h mounted in vertical slots i in the vehicle body, a rigid support l arranged out of the longitudinal axis of the vehicle and extending a shorter distance from the bottom plate k than the running rims of the wheels e and f, and two rod-shaped feelers n and n<1> frictionally adjustable at the two ends of a transverse bar m simulating the front buffer. The vehicle is weighted at c or the motor is arranged at the rear. If the feelers n, n<1> are raised, the vehicle moves in an arc on the track surface, Fig. 5, whilst if the feelers are lowered to slide on the track the vehicle runs in a straight line until it reaches the edge p of the surface o<1> when it is turned, Fig. 8. If only one of the feelers n<1>, Fig. 9, is lowered and the vehicle is placed on the support l with the feeler n<1> overhanging the edge of the track, the vehicle will run along the edge as it tends to perform an arcuate movement as shown in Fig. 5. In the construction shown in Fig. 10, the rigid support l is replaced by a lever q pivotally mounted on a pin r above the bottom plate k. If the lever q hangs down its face t comes into contact with the plate k and it acts like the rigid support l whilst if the lever q is swung inwards and held, the vehicle travels in a straight line.
