Abstract

459,035. Electromagnetic sound recording and /or reproducing apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. July 27, 1936, No. 20782. Convention date, July 26, 1935. [Class 40 (ii)] An arrangement for driving the record carrier band b in magnetic sound recording and/or reproducing apparatus comprises a separate motor for driving the take-off and take-up reels 1, 2 in a direction such that the band is pulled in opposite directions thereby, a third motor having a uniform rotation being employed to drive a roller 4 to impart a uniform speed to the band at the recording or reproducing point. The motors driving the reels preferably have a series characteristic and are of less power than the third motor, whilst the reel motor which is, for the time being, pulled reversely to its normal direction of rotation has a series resistance connected thereto. Each of the reels 1, 2 is provided with a magnetically operated band brake 5. When the machine is used for recording or reproducing, the band is pressed against the roller 4 by an electromagnetically operated idler pulley 3 which, however, is moved away from the roller when re-winding or searching for any desired part of a record by accelerated forward winding. The motors may be controlled by a pressbutton switch with three positions.
