Abstract
459,020. Billet - piercing. ALFINA IMMOBILIEN-, FINANZIERUNGS & VERWALTUNGS. AKT.-GES., Glarus, Switzerland. May 13, 1936, Nos. 13575 and 13576. Convention dates, Feb. 17 and March 9. [Class 83 (iv)] Relates to a process and apparatus for piercing blanks with a tapered bottom for tube drawing by means of a mandrel forced into a glowing blank not completely filling the crosssection of a matrix, and consists in subjecting the blank in the region surrounding the piercing mandrel to a continuous feed pressure acting parallel to the pressure of the mandrel, thereby assisting in overcoming the friction against the walls of the matrix. Means are employed to centre the blank before piercing. As shown, the blank is placed in a matrix a of tapered form and provided at its base with an ejector r. A feed ring c surrounds the mandrel b and may have wedge-shaped surfaces h for centring the blank. The ring is carried by a cross-bar e attached to pistons d operating in cylinders f which communicate with a supply m of compressed air by means of a valve v. A second valve W loaded to a greater pressure and adjusted by a control x determines the maximum pressure acting in the cylinders f. The mandrel is operated by a plunger after the feed ring c is pressed against the blank and on retraction of the mandrel, the feed ring strips the blank which remains in the matrix until ejection by the rod r.
